Blue House Programs
Project “Blue House” New
Orleans, Lousianna
(A proposed collaborative
project between ADC, DRUUMM Caucus, ARE, EFWMA and Generation
Preservation Inc.)
A year after Katrina,
the Lower 9th Ward is still a ghost like community. The
Little Blue House which is a Common Ground Project for the
distribution of food, clothing and other necessities, is in dire
need of help. When I was there a few weeks ago, their shelves were
nearly bare. EFWMA and Generation Preservation Inc. have already
started fundraising
activities.
If we (DRUUMM) are successful with our fundraising, we can make a
contribution also
A message from Project
Blue
House:
We are constantly working with the residents to identify the
community’s most pressing needs. Due to the ongoing changes
occurring throughout the Lower Ninth Ward, our programs are
frequently transforming and evolving. Here is an overview of our
current projects and programs.
·
Distribution Center
The distribution center provides residents with food, water, baby
care supplies, cleaning supplies, clothing, books and other
household items. The distribution center also serves as a community
space, where we have held meetings and other forums.
·
Tool Lending Library
Our Tool Lending Library provides residents with the necessary
safety gear and tools to gut out and begin initial repairs on their
homes. We also provide instruction on how to do this work safely and
effectively.
·
Demolition Registration
Residents can receive assistance filling out debris removal or
demolition forms. They are also able to register with Common Ground
to prevent demolition, as we are watching the lists closely.
·
House gutting
Residents can sign up for free assistance for the cleaning and
gutting of their homes. We also offer safety training and tip sheets
for families interested gutting out their own homes.
·
Public Computer Lab
Residents have access to computers, phones, and other office
equipment. We assist people with a wide range of queries, from
processing their FEMA paperwork to registering for a new driver’s
license.
